Fishing on Eagle Mountain Lake has been insane! The channel catfish are fired up, the blue catfish are coming off the beds and starting to bite (and we’ve had some big fish show up in the past few weeks). The white bass are on the move in the main lake and we’re starting to see some topwater action some mornings!
Catfish and White Bass
We’re catching excellent numbers of white bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish on our guided fishing trips and have limited out on most of our recent trips. The quality of the catfish has been off the charts as well!
The catfish bite will continue to stay good through the summer and into the fall, if you want to catch a TON of fish and get in on some fast action WHACK EM AND STACK EM® fishing then it’s a great time to come catching! The white bass bite will typically be good on the weekdays but the white bass start moving a lot this time of year (and moving fast) so I don’t waste a lot of time on them if I can’t find them quickly but now that a thermocline is starting to set in we’re starting to see some of the early morning topwater white bass action. Because the white bass can be so unpredictable in July and August I typically don’t book dedicated white bass trips but if you want to try to catch some we can certainly work it into a catfish trip.
Crappie Fishing
Now THE CRAPPIE. I’m going to do a limited number of crappie trips in August and September. These fish are starting to try to move on to the brush piles but with the lake levels dropping so quickly I’m not sure what’s going to happen. If you want to try to come do some crappie fishing with me in August or September just give me a shout and let’s discuss it. We can do a combo trip and fish catfish and crappie or just a crappie-only trip (assuming the water levels don’t drop so fast that it pushes these fish off the brush).
Eagle Mountain Lake Levels
The lake is currently 5.5 feet low and dropping anywhere from an inch to an inch and a half a day. It dropped 7 inches between Friday of last week and Monday of this week. I’ve guided on the lake during many of these droughts, one when it got almost 12 feet low, and was still able to launch so I’m not going anywhere and will continue fishing on Eagle Mountain Lake.
That being said if you plan on bringing your own boat on the lake you need to be very careful. Make sure you have a current mapping card, have the water levels adjusted on your fishfinder, and that you’re paying attention. I’ve seen a dozen boats that have been hard grounded in the past three weeks and many have been damaged. These are very expensive to get pulled out and it’s dangerous so if you’re coming to the lake you need to be prepared and aware! I’d also suggest getting a Boat US Membership to cover towing in case something happens!
There are places on the main lake that have less than 1 foot of water right now so use extreme caution!
Summer Fishing Trips
Summer trips are still half-day mornings (4 hours). I’m starting at 6:15 so we can be off the water at 10:15 and beat the heat.
