North Texas Catfish Guide Service provides guided fishing trips for Blue Catfish on Lake Lewisvlle and Cedar Creek Lake primarily but on occasion we will run our guided catfish fishing trips for Blue Catfish on Richland Chambers, Eagle Mountain Lake, The Brazos River, Lake texoma or Lake Limestone. While we do offer guided catfishing trips for channel catfish and flathead catfish the majority of oour catfishing on our guided catfish fishing trips is done for Blue Catfish for the majority of the year.
The Blue Catfish is a very misunderstood fish compared to other catfish by most anglers and most do not undertsand the differences or feeding habits of these catfish. North Texas Catfish Guide Service has spent countless hours on the water learning the patterns of the blue catfish and how to catch them and we have a tremendous success record in finding and catching blue catfish of all sizes during different times of the year.
Many people ask about why our preference is to fish for Blue Catfish, and there are several reasons behind this. First and foremost in Texas the Blue Catfish is definately the bigger of the catfish species with the most abundant numbers of catchable fish.. While most lakes in Texas have large populations of Channel Catfish, the average size of these Channel Catfish overall is very small, and the Channel Catfish simply do not grow to larger sizes in Texas like they do in some other areas like the Red River in Canada. It's not uncommon when fishing for blue catfish to catch fish that average 4-6 lbs in size with numerous larger fish mixed in, while this typically cannot be said of the Channel Catfish in Texas. So the answer to the first question about why we typically prefer to fish for Blue Catfish on our Guided Fishing Trips for Catfish in North Texas is THEY TYPICALLY ARE MUCH BIGGER FISH.
Second, North Texas is fortunate to have a number of different lakes that have excellent populations of Blue Catfish of all sizes. Of these lakes with good Blue Catfish populations Lake Lewisville and Cedar Creek lake are definately in the top billing, along with Lake Texoma. Lake Lewisville, Cedar Creek Lake, and Lake Texoma have all had a long standing reputation for producing excellent catches of blue catfish of all sizes, and also for producing excellent quantities of Trophy Blue Catfish as well. Lake Texoma even produced the world record catfish that weighed in at 121.9 lbs just a couple of years ago. Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Lewisville Blue Catfish are excellent in numbers and both lakes have a history of producing excellent catches of rus on our guided catfishing trips for Blue Catfish. Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Lewisville also have an excellent history of producing excellent catches of Trophy Blue Catfish as well. So the answer to the second question about why we typically prefer to fish for Blue Catfish on our Guided Fishing Trips for Catfish in North Texas is WE HAVE MULTIPLE LAKES WITH EXCELLENT BLUE CATFISH POPULATIONS OF BOTH AVERAGE "KEEPER SIZE" (BOX FISH) BLUE CATFISH AND TROPHY BLUE CATFISH.
Third, the Blue Catfish is a predator fish, unlike the Channel Catfish that most consider to be a scavenger fish, the Blue Catfish primary forage is Shad and Baitfish. Blue Catfish spend their lives actively chasing and feeding on schools of bait fish, or dead bait fish that they are able to pick up. I would venture to say that 99% of the diet of the Blue Catfish is Shad. Because of this we are able to use fresh caught shad for catfish bait on our guided catfish fishing trips and the Blue Catfish becomes very predictable, as they are always going to be at or near their primary food source, the schools of Threadfin Shad and Gizzard Shad. This is not your grandaddy's catfishing! Most people have an image of catffishing with cane poles fishing under the dark of night with lanterns and leisurely waiting for the catfish bto come along and bite. The methods that we use for finding and catching blue catfish on our guided catfish fishing trips could not be further from this image. We use high powered sonar electronics, and find schools of bait fish based on their seasonal pattern and then employ a number of different techniques to find and catch the feeding blue catfish using the most advanced fishing tackle, rod and reels available today. While our preference is to locate the fish on our Lowrance Sonar and anchor up on the blue catfish, we will on occasion use a number of other techniques like drift fishing (drifting), doodlesocking, cormorant catfishing (water turkey fishing or splat fishing) and more. So the answer to the third question about why we typically prefer to fish for Blue Catfish on our Guided Fishing Trips for Catfish in North Texas is BLUE CATFISH ARE AGRESSIVE FEEDERS, THAT TYPICALLY BITE MUCH MORE AGRESSIVE THAN CHANNEL CATFISH AND ALLOW US TO USE A NUMBER OF NON-TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES FOR FINDING AND CATCHING CATFISH..
I guess to sum it all up you could say the reasons our preference is to fish for Blue Catfish is because we have numberous lakes with excellent populations, they typically grow bigger than channel catfish, they bite more agressive and they are more fun to catch. Again, we do have customers who often prefer fishing for Channel Catfish, and we do offer our guided fishing trips on some lakes that have better populations of Channel Catfish so in those instances we would fish for Channel Catfish instead, but rest assured the techniques for finding and catching Blue Catfish are much different than the techniques used for finding and catching Channel Catfish.
Trophy Blue Catfish Fishing Trips with North Texas Catfish Guide Service are available on Lake Lewisville and Cedar Creek Lake. Blue Catfish fishing trips with North Texas Catfish Guide Service for "keeper fish" or "box fish" are available on Lake Lewisville, Cedar Creek Lake, Richland Chambers Reservoir, Lake Limestome, Eagle Mountain Lake, The Brazos River and The Trinity River.

Blue Catfish (Ictalurus furcatus)
Hump-back Blue, High Fin Blue, Mississippi White
The spawning behavior of blue catfish appears to be similar to that of channel catfish. However, most blue catfish are not sexually mature until they reach about 24 inches in length. Like channel catfish, the blue catfish pursues a varied diet, but it tends to eat fish earlier in life. Although invertebrates still comprise the major portion of the diet, blue catfish as small as four inches in length have been known to consume fish. Individuals larger than eight inches eat fish and large invertebrates. Blue catfish commonly attain weights of 20 to 40 pounds, and may reach weights well in excess of 100 pounds. It is reported that fish exceeding 350 pounds were landed from the Mississippi River during the late 1800's.
Blue catfish are native to major rivers of the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi river basins. The range also extends south through Texas, Mexico, and into northern Guatemala. In Texas it is absent from the northwestern portions of the state including the Panhandle, but present elsewhere in larger rivers.
